Change

Change is not an easy part of life especially if it has to do with our habits, attitudes or character. It is not easy but it is possible.

Here is the best illustration I ever read on change by Lou Priolo;
If I had a glass(representing heart or mind) of water and I wanted to empty it, I may pour out the water but someone may refill it again. To make the glass harder to be refilled, I'd start  by pouring into the glass something heavier than the water-perhaps little grains of sand, or maybe a dense fluid. These would displace the water from the bottom. As I fill it, all the water will eventually spill out over the glass.

The water is like sin in our hearts, bad attitudes in our minds or flaws in our character. The sand or denser liquid is the biblical solution.

It is hard to change by saying I will stop doing this. From today on wards, I am no longer like this, or like that. That very easily fails. It works best when you start intentionally doing the right thing. For example, If you would want to stop lying, you do not just keep quiet, you speak the truth. If you want to stop stealing, you start giving and replace the urge to take with the urge to give. You replace the habit or attitude with it's biblical antidote.

Colossians 3
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.[b] You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised,barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

With the Holy Spirit's help, it is possible to break the evil influences on your life.
Put off, put on. Put off, put on. Put off, put on.
